Step into the world of Naomi Novik’s Temeraire series with a new RPG in the works from Magpie Games, set to launch in 2026!
The world of Temeraire (which starts with His Majesty’s Dragon) is one that almost sounds like a meme – the premise is what if dragons were around during the Napoleonic wars? But it is hands down one of my favorite fantasy series of the last decade. It digs into the historical context and the fantasy premise with gusto.
Because dragons, in Naomi Novik’s bestselling world, are living, breathing, sentient beings. They are treated poorly by some of the countries that use them as weapons of war (and that’s like a big part of both the plot and the social commentary of these books), but it also makes for delicious tension between characters.
And it’s what will make this RPG an exciting one because you can play as both Rider and Dragon. The number of RPGs where you can play as a dragon is surprisingly small. So I’m excited to see another in the entry.
Magpie Games Brings Naomi Novik’s Temeraire To Tabletop RPGs In 2026
Magpie Games announced that the Temeraire RPG was coming first to Kickstarter in “early 2026” which could mean anything from January 1 to sometime in May-ish. Hopefully it’s early “early” rather than late “early”.
I think Magpie is tackling some fun new ground with this RPG. Novik’s dynamic of Dragon and Rider is one you won’t find outside of like a Pern type story. But this one has all the trappings of the Napoleonic Wars layered over it. So you can worry about logistics and supply lines, as well as daring fort and castle raids.
While the game centers around the dragon/rider dynamic, it looks like there’s gonna be a lot to play around with. So if you love the world of Temeraire, in any of its 9 volumes, you might want to check this RPG out.
“Prepare to take to the skies as the aviators and dragons of the Napoleonic era in Temeraire: The Roleplaying Game. Fight in epic military battles, bond with your dragon (or your rider), and follow your passions into Regency era romance. Alongside your fellow dragons and aviators, discover the balance between your duties and your desires as war rages across Europe!”

I’m a fan of “Regency Era Romance” being part of the pitch for the game. Novik and romantic pairings go hand in hand. After all, she was one of the cofounders of AO3 (an archive of our own if you happen to somehow be blissfully unaware of the worlds of fanfiction) and is a big part of the reason the Supernatural fandom is so huge on there.
At any rate, look for Temeraire from Magpie Games in early 2026. You can sign up to learn more at the link below!
Now, the real question is, how does riding a dragon compare with the ability to fire three rounds a minute for real soldiering?
