We aren’t quite to Elminster hitting the Griddy alongside Goku, but D&D announced a Fortnite collaboration today.
In evolution, if you let something go long enough, it becomes a crab. In popular culture, if you let something evolve long enough, it becomes Fortnite. This is evidenced by the appearance of an entire Ready Player One’s worth of cultural crossovers – including Goku, Thanos, John Wick, Batman, K-Pop Demon Hunters Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, and even Kelsier, of Mistborn fame, has made it to the Fortnite Island.
Which brings us to today’s announcement that D&D is going to be in Fortnite. Sort of. In the form of five fan-made islands made in collaboration with Fortnite creators Chartis and Teravision Games.
D&D Comes To Fortnite
In a nutshell, the D&D x Fortnite Crossover takes the form of five fan-made, D&D-themed Fortnite islands. In a collaboration between WotC and both Chartis and Teravision Games (which, of course it makes sense that “Fortnite creator” is a big enough to have whole studios), to create “a special series of fan-made islands.”
Basically, it’s not Epic Games throwing the resources that brought you the DJ Marshmello or Aurora Concert at it. It doesn’t sound like you’ll be fighting Vecna at Loot Lake. Instead, you’ll get custom maps that depict places like the Spine of the World mountains, where you’ll fight D&D villains. Though none as famous as the archlich (to be fair, he’s already in Dead by Daylight).
“Fortnite and D&D players both new and old will now have the chance to enjoy the action and creativity of Fortnite with D&D-inspired twists. They will visit familiar D&D locations in the Forgotten Realms including the Yawning Portal tavern, the Spine of the World mountains, Mount Hotenow, and many more, and will battle some of the legends of D&D including Klauth the ancient red dragon and feared necromancer Valindra Shadowmantle.”
WotC is really scraping the ol’ Glup Shitto barrel for this one, it seems. But hey, you get to fight a big dragon. On the five different islands, you’ll get a “PVP arena, social hub, a platformer, a co-op boss fight, and a co-op roguelike”.
