Monte Cook Games announced a return to Numenera with a new edition: Numenera: The Amber Archive coming soon.

Monte Cook Games is back with a new edition for Numenera, titled Numenera: The Amber Archive, freshly announced and coming soon to BackerKit. This is a big step forward for the Ninth World, which has seen some updates over the years, but now a formal new edition opens wide the doors for some big changes to the post-post-post-post-post-post-post-apocalyptic world.

Numenera: The Amber Archive – A New Edition Of The Ninth World

When it first came out, Numenera was the vanguard of what would become the Cypher System. This is Monte Cook Games’ system of consumable resources that do cool things and characters that can kind of be described as “a blank blank who blanks.” It’s got narrative flexibility but enough crunch that you can still go through and find people figuring out the best “character-builds.”

Now, after more than a decade, there’s a new edition. This will incorporate all manner of updates, including ones that Numenera itself helped to iterate on with some of its later expansions. As Monte Cook Games puts it, the new edition focuses on “being steramlined, while adding more lore for our loyal fans.”

Our world. A world defined by their works—some the scale of nations; others that might nest within your palm. What were they for? Alas, in this dark age they are as magic. As incomprehensible as they are mysterious—and often as deadly. But where they remember some germ of their function, they offer unfathomable power. Those with sufficient courage, wit, and ambition to explore and master them call these works of the prior worlds the… NUMENERA!

Rediscover the Ninth World as you’ve never before encountered it! The all-new edition of this storied game world delivers the mystery, astonishment, danger, and wonder that’s defined over a decade of Numenera play—now faster, easier, and even better. Launch a new campaign or take your existing game to fascinating new places as you unlock the secrets of the Amber Archive!”

Now, I will be the first to say that you might bounce off of the Cypher System RPG. It is extremely flexible, but it is also not for everyone. However, the setting of Numenera is one of my all-time favorites. It is our world, a billion years into the future, altered by nine world-shaking powers. It captures the vibe of something like Caves of Qud without all the grist.

Now with a new edition in the works, I’m stoked to see what changes they make. It might be time to return to the Ninth World.
