The Eldritch Raiders are coming to take objectives and defend their loot. The Corsair Coterie are coming to Warhammer 40,000!

We’ve got Prince Yriel on deck with his new Corsair crew. Along with that they are taking on the Maelstrom with some new Detachment Rules that we’re taking a look at today. So let’s gear up and get ready to do a little rules pillaging of our own!

Yeah, the Relentless Raiders rule makes it a real pain charging into one of the Corsairs’ held objectives, and since they hold onto strategic locations without needing to be there in person, you can play a great game of cat-and-mouse as enemy forces blow themselves up chasing you between objectives.

Corsair Coterie Detachment Rules

There’s two parts to this new Detachment. The First of which is Relentless Raiders. This one is great for not just taking objectives and moving but also for trapping them for your enemy.

The D3 Mortal Wounds might not seem like much but keep in mind that it’s each time. So if multiple units drop in that’s multiple rolls to make. But this is just one part. The other part of this rule is the Veterans of the Void which can have a big impact on your squad building.

What exactly are these Corsair Enhancements? Well, we don’t have all of them listed but we do have these two as examples:

Webway Pathstone gives a unit Deep Strike and on top of that the unit can also go back into Strategic Reserves once per battle. I’m sure cunning commanders will find a use for that ability. Infamy (Aura) is another option. This one really plays nicely with Relentless Raiders because it lowers the Objective Control for enemy units within 3″ by 1. That should make taking (or holding) objectives even easier.

Since we got a look at the new datasheets already I think we’re getting a pretty clear understanding of what the new Corsair army is aiming to do. This army looks like it’s going to be a glass cannon, but more like a scalpel than cannonball. They also have loads of repositioning tricks and can really prevent the enemy from getting too close to objective. These new Corsairs could be a really tough army to master but if anyone does figure them out, woe be to their opponents!

Other Maelstrom Detachments

WarCom also dropped these tidbits about the other 4 Detachments coming in the Maelstrom books:

  • A raiding party including Huron Blackheart himself, that wants nothing more to please their maniacal master
  • Prince Yriel’s most elite raiders, who move like lightning alongside Path of the Outcast allies
  • An Ork Freebooter crew who genuinely play the objective game rather than just breaking things – but only because they want the shiny gubbinz stashed there
  • Mercenary Kin who weaponise the acquisition and spending of their Yield Points for explosive effects

Those also sound promising! I’d like to see their actual rules before I make any judgement calls however. I am glad to see we’re going get some Leagues of Votann and Ork options, too.

Yriel vs Huron. Which side of this pirate fight are you on?
