Is this new boxed set for Huron Blackheart and crew going to be worth getting? Let’s do some math to find out.
The Masters of the Maelstrom boxed set is coming to pre-order this weekend from Games Workshop. I’ve got a pretty good idea of the price of this boxed set and I think we can make some pretty good comparisons to other GW products to determine if this boxed set is priced right or not. This one is going to be a little weird though. So let’s get into it!
Huron Blackheart & The Masters of the Maelstrom Pricing Breakdown
Contents
- Huron Blackheart
- Red Corsair Command Squad
- Garreon the Corpsemaster
- Katar Garrix
- Garlon Souleater
- Captain Sargotta
- Enforcer with Plunder
Now, the closest thing we can compare this to price-wise is the boxed set for Captain Titus and the Wardens of Ultramar. That one clocks in a $94. I think the Masters of the Maelstrom is going to end up at the exact same price point. So that’s it. Math is done and we can all go home…right?
While that IS true many of these characters have 1:1 comparisons to other units. So I think it’s at least worth looking at in that light. If these were all individual characters what would this box set cost? That’s what I really want to know.
Total Estimated Individual MSRP = $251.50
Total Estimated Savings = $157.50
*Why Ursula Creed? I was looking for an Astra Militarum Officer that was on a larger, scenic base. This was a close approximation.
** Why Fabius Bile? I was initially going to grab a Kroot character but none of them had a pet. Fabius Bile was in the same ballpark of “a character model that comes with a pet.”
I’m all for alternate suggestions on pricing for those two characters however.
So It’s a Deal, Right?
So is this box actually a good deal or even a good representation of “savings” from Games Workshop? Honestly, their pricing structure is still a mystery to everyone outside of GW. If someone says that they’ve cracked the code I’m betting there’s someone else out there that prove them wrong with counter examples. Why does a 10 man Assault Intercessor Squad cost $65 and a 5 man Havoc Squad cost $65? I can’t really tell you other than that’s what GW lists the price as.
Having said all that, this box is directly comparable to the Captain Titus and the Wardens of Ultramar box as mentioned. At the same time, you can point out the four Chaos Space Marine characters in this box and the direct units they seem to be based on. I don’t think those prices can really be argued. If anything, I’d say that Huron is probably even more expensive than a Chaos Space Marine Chaos Lord.
In a weird way this box is full of characters but actually not. Game-wise, it’s two units in one box. Huron is independent and the rest of the miniatures are one unit. So however you want to square that with GW’s pricing is really up to you. Do I think it’s a good deal? Objectively, yes. I think you’re getting a box of Chaos Space Marine character miniatures and if they were individual releases they probably be a whole lot more. Having them bundled together seems like it’s making them a cheaper purchase overall.
But I think the best deal is for the miniatures you’re actively going to use. If you’re looking to start a new Red Corsair army this seems like a great start. If you’re looking for some alternate miniatures for OTHER CSM units, I think this is also a good box, too. It’s kind of weird to have a Chaos Apothecary but I wouldn’t be mad if someone converted him to be a Warpsmith or some other Chaos Character. That’s just a cool hobby project to me!
Such a weird boxed set. I think I want one just to paint now though…
