The Darkest Woods is a “system agnostic horror experience” that’s designed to work in just about any RPG with a touch of darkness.
Monte Cook Games has a new RPG horror experience. Though this time, it’s designed to fit any campaign. Any setting. As long as there can be horror, you can run The Darkest Woods in it. At least that’s the theory.
The Darkest Woods promises to deliver an experience that will chill “even the most battle-hardened characters,” while also enriching your campaign with “life-altering challenges” and deeper explorations into character motivations and party bonds. But what does all that mean?
The Darkest Woods – Horror For Any RPG
In a nutshell, it’s a horror story designed to get you into the heads of your characters a little more. Especially a party that has already been established – because your characters’ memories and personal fears are the heart of this horror, rather than any monster with a ton of hit points.
That’s the nature of the beast when designing something system-agnostic. Same with the premise; the eponymous Darkest Woods is a forest that encroaches into various realities. Including the reality of your campaign world.
Do not mistake the forest’s quietude for mercy. Nor its shadowed depths as denser versions of its pleasant shallows. For to venture deeper is to become lost in the ancient chambers of the forest’s dark heart, where twisted and sinister things dwell. Do not lose yourself to the Woods’ darkening depths.
For no matter where you come from—no matter what daylit world you previously walked—the Woods and its sinister inhabitants will test your mettle as you wander its dusk-dark paths. Find out who you are—and what you’re made of—inside The Darkest Woods.
Personally, I think that system-agnostic horror is probably the way to go if you’re not playing in a system designed for horror. Vanilla D&D just isn’t scary if you know the monsters have hit points and can be killed. But, this kinda horror depends on your players buying in.
So if you have a group that really likes to get into the flesh and bones, the sinew and marrow of their characters, you might want to check out The Darkest Woods.
