Archon Studio laid out their plan for Starcraft: The Miniatures Game hobby retail channel preorder, in response to retailer concerns.
StarCraft: The Miniatures Game was one of the hottest games of AdeptiCon 2026 (see “AdeptiCon 2026 News“), but on the retail and distribution level, there was an issue involving wholesale pricing that led to retailer questions and concerns (see “Rolling for Initiative“). It seems that the game was initially offered to retailers on preorder at a short discount, and then, after some pushback, Archon improved the distribution discount. To further quell further retailer concerns, Archon Studio laid out their preorder plan for the Starcraft: The Miniatures Game line in the interest of transparency.
From now until April 17, 2026, the game will be in a temporary Founders Edition preorder phase (for the two-player starter set). This is a time-limited launch window that is designed for direct-to-consumer sales. The rationale behind this was that Archon would try to establish a tabletop community with a limited release prior to the game entering the hobby retail channel. The DTC phase is a deliberate preorder strategy with the goal of drumming up support for the game, and it will not be extended or repeated; the Founder’s Edition boxed set is a one-time release.
As the initial Founder’s Edition phase winds down, the NA hobby and retail distribution phase ratchets up for Wave 1 release of the miniatures line, which features the Starcraft evergreen retail sets. This program is aimed at distributor and retailer discount tiers, and it includes a MAP policy and distributor terms for tariff coverage. Archon’s DTC channel will adhere to the MAP policy and not compete with retailers on price.
“Our goal with the launch program was to offer a Founder’s Edition Starter set that provided incredible value for early adopting gamers of the new StarCraft game,” said Daryl McKay, Head of NA Business Development at Archon Studio. “Available for all channels, our goal with these starter preview sets was to create a player base of 40,000 + players per faction at launch who would act as advocates for in-store communities.”
Archon also highlighted that this game line has a planned 10-year pipeline that will offer 40 SKUs per faction in the game. The company also noted that the pipeline plan represents the potential for “sustained reorder and growth potential for retail stockists.”
