It’s been a few weeks sense AdeptiCon but I think it’s time to talk about the new City of Ash box coming Age of Sigmar.

I know the news about Warhammer 40,000 11th edition really sucked up all the oxygen in the room but the were a lot of other cool reveals at AdeptiCon. One that I personally, thought was neat was the upcoming Spearhead: City of Ash box. I think Spearhead games are fun and they are an easy way to get into Warhammer: Age of Sigmar. But this new boxed set really looks promising.

City of Ash is a new boxed set for Warhammer Age of Sigmar that features two complete Spearhead forces – from the Cities of Sigmar and Skaven – along with a battlepack of missions and game rules, a city-themed double-sided board, and new terrain.

Spearhead: City of Ash – Jumping Into Spearhead

While this boxed set isn’t a launch box it still has a lot of cool things inside. As mentioned, you’re getting two full Spearhead armies in the box. But more importantly (I think) is that this will be the first crack at some brand new miniatures for their respective army.

The Skaven Spearhead consists of the following units:

  • Deathmaster Crixxit
  • Skaven Deathmaster
  • 10x Gutter Runners
  • 10x Night Runners
  • 2x Bomb rats (probably part of the Night Runners kit)

I know that the Gutter and Night Runners are a popular Skaven unit that folks were excited about. Deathmaster Crixxit also looks awesome and I’m looking forward to seeing what the community does with that miniature.

This seems like a pretty typical Spearhead force but it’s one that’s needed. It’s another facet of the Skaven army and they are finally getting that part updated.

For the Cities of Sigmar, they are getting a new character a bunch of new Freeguild miniatures to match.

Their forces include:

  • Ranger-Colonel Jorvan Kreel with his loyal companion
  • Mallus Forgepriest
  • 5x Freeguild Gallants
  • 10x Freeguild Gallants

While I’m not a Cities of Sigmar player myself, I know these new units are really solid additions to that army. The Freeguild Gallants and Grenadiers fill in some weakness the army had quite well. I think the Grenadiers in particular might be a very versatile unit to bring.

On top of the two Spearhead forces, you’ll also get the new terrain and the board you need to play Spearhead games on.

I really hope we see more of this particular terrain set in the future. These destroyed buildings certainly look like there was a lot more to them before the battle started. And if you were needing a new Spearhead board, well, this set has you covered.

Comparatively, I think this box is going to have about the same amount of stuff as the previous/current Spearhead “intro” box. It’s certainly got more than the Sand & Bone Gaming pack. That one was basically just a board and terrain plus a scenario book.

Price-wise we haven’t gotten confirmation on that yet but I’m assuming it’s going to be in that same $200 range like the Spearhead Starter set. That one clocked in at $220 so I wouldn’t be surprised if the City of Ash was equal to that one. In some ways it seems like a replacement/update to that set. Then again, I don’t know if GW announced that City of Ash was going to be a wholly new replacement either.

I say get the one(s) that have the army you’re most interested in playing. Spearhead is a good way to learn the core game and try out other armies. All you need is a Spearhead box and an opponent!

I wonder if we’ll get more Spearhead box refreshes for the rest of the Armies in Age of Sigmar.
