Paizo announced 13 Omens, a new ‘rules-lite’ Horror RPG set in the modern world, coming soon to a tabletop near you.
It seems that horror is in the air these days. And while I would normally say it seems out of season, I mean, I dunno have you looked at the news these days? Maybe the only way to escape the horrors of real life is in a fictional horror game where you’re at least in control of everything going horribly awry.
Especially since, from the announcement and some details unearthed at UK Games Expo events registration page, 13 Omens will be all about how your characters meet an untimely end. So, let’s check out what we know so far about Paizo’s upcoming new horror RPG.
Paizo’s 13 Omens – Probably Not A 13 Ghosts Of Scooby-Doo Homage
Actually the news is pretty significant. As far as I know, this is Paizo’s first ever RPG that steps outside of the Path/Star-finder verse. It’s not set in Golarion, it is set in our world, according to some scant details found on an events entry for 13 Omens being run by Paizo’s own Erik Mona:
“13 Omens is a rules-light horror roleplaying game set in our world, but beset by supernatural terrors. The game is designed to be played in a single evening and it features a shared bag of communal dice, to which more and more Omen Dice are added throughout the evening, to amp up the danger.”

These guys just aren’t as scary as our world’s woes.
It’s worth mentioning the event entry because Paizo’s announcement is very light on the details. Perhaps as ‘lite’ as the rules for 13 Omens will be. For now, all we know is that you have a shared pool of communal dice, that it gets harder to survive, and that “character death is extremely likely.” Here’s the announcement in full:
“13 Omens is a modern, supernatural, rules-lite horror TTRPG set in a dark reflection of our world; beset by horrifying specters, bloodthirsty killers, cursed places, and secrets best left unknown. Designed by Jason Bulmahn and Joe Pasini, this game features an easy-to-learn game engine that ramps up the tension as the story builds to a terrifying conclusion.”

Again, I’m as surprised as you are that Golarion doesn’t enter this somehow. But I am excited to see what this means. It does sound a little bit reminiscent of 10 Candles, but that’s not a bad thing. Any horror RPG that acknowledges you’re meant to meet a gruesome end is doing it right.
After all, it’s hard to do horror properly in a world where you can just call upon the gods or magic that is often more potent than the entity stalking you from the shadows in the first place. But our world? Well there’s plenty of room for horror there. You can sign up to learn more via Paizo’s mailing list at the link below.
Okay but just imagine if someone did do a 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo RPG!
