Want to be the perfect stealth/assassin type character? Here are five feats that can help!

From Stealth Archers in Skyrim, to the stealth takedowns of games like Kingdom Come Deliverance or even Cyberpunk 2077, the idea of a stealthy character who can kill from the shadows without ever being seen pervades fantasy fiction. Little wonder then, that it’s a popular archetype – even D&D has its Assassin subclass. But, even if you don’t want to play a Rogue, there are still plenty of ways to excel at being a stealthy assassin type character.

In particular, there’s a suite of feats that can turn any character into a master of stealth. Here are a few to consider the next time you decide to go for stealth and subtlety.

Skulker

This is the only must-have feat if you want to play a stealthy character. But that’s because it does so much. If you know your character will be starbed for feats, Skulker will accomplish most of what you need; it gives you advantage on Stealth checks to hide during combat, gives you Blindsight out to 10 ft., increases your Dex by 1, and lets you remain hidden if you miss with a ranged attack from stealth.

But if you have room for more feats, then this is only the beginning. A solid foundation, but there’s room to grow!

Shadow Touched

In D&D, if you want to be really good at something, magic is often the best answer. And you don’t even have to be playing a spellcaster to get access to some fairly potent stealth magic. The Shadow Touched Feat will grant you the Invisibility spell plus one spell of your choice from the Illusion or Necromancy schools. This can include things like Disguise Self or Wrathful Smite to set up a devastating sneak attack/stealth kill.

Poisoner

This Feat is all about the assassin side of the equation. With this, you gain an increase to Dex or Intelligence, and the ability to use poison to great effect. Not only can you use a bonus action to apply a dose of poison to a weapon, dealing a minimum of 2d8 extra damage (absolutely killer at level 4), your poison damage also ignores a creature’s Poison Resistance.

Skill Expert

This one is mostly for people who aren’t playing Rogues or Rangers or Bards but who still want to be Stealthy. Picking up this feat will grant you Expertise with any skill, which you’ll want to be Stealth. Expertise is one of the only ways to push your ability check bonuses up beyond the norms of bounded accuracy, and since this feat lets you increase a stat of your choice, it’s not bad for anyone who wants to excel at Stealth. Even a Paladin.

Athlete

For those of you who want to go all Assassin’s Creed style, the Athlete Feat is your best friend. It straight up just gives you a Climbing speed equal to your walking speed, meaning you don’t have to make ability checks to scale things, you can just go basically anywhere that’s climable. Moreso if you pickup Slider Climb from somewhere. But this feat also increases your jump distance and lets you stand up from prone for only 5 feet of movement instead of half your speed, making for a very picture of agile assassinry.

What do you pick if you’re going to be a Stealth machine?
