It has been quite some time since anyone has attempted a DC Universe specific tabletop RPG. But soon, Mark Waid hopes to change that.
I mean, it’s more than just Mark Waid. He’s the big name attached to the project, and having a big name in the headline means you click, and if you click, I can afford to buy the good mac and cheese, so, yeah, Mark Waid, the comics legend, is working to bring you, the clicker, a new DC Universe tabletop RPG.
He’s also working with Brazilian games publisher D20 Culture and a subunit of whatever the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate is these days (Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products – which sounds like the name of a company in a cyberpunk dystopia that started off with some kind of video game but now they manufacture assassin borgs). The end result will be the first new DC/Justice League RPG in nearly twenty years.
Titled Justice League Unlimited: The Roleplaying Game, the new RPG will let you play as members of the Justice League. You can play as existing heroes or create your own. How will it all work? What tools will you be able to draw upon? How exactly is Mark Waid involved? Scroll on, dear clicker, scroll on.
Justice League Unlimited – A New DC Universe RPG Coming Soon
To answer the last question first, Mark Waid is co-authoring Justice League Unlimited: The Roleplaying Game. The game itself is a “narrative driven table-top roleplaying game that will invite players to forge their own legends within the expansive DC Universe.” And that’s a pretty broad premise. I mean the DC Universe features all sorts of legends – everyone from ancient space gods like Darkseid to War Wheel, a big Wheel that’s armored and outfitted with weapons. To say nothing of Calendar Man or Bouncing Boy or any of the other absolute weirdos from DC’s long and substance-fueled romp.
But you’ll probably be dead-set on playing Superman. Which is fine. Because Kryptonians are on the table. As are Amazons, Cyborgs, and other Meta-Humans. They don’t say specifically that you can play as Batman and Superman (probably for legal reasons?), but you can play as “The Champion of Tomorrow” who inspires hope, or “The Dark Knight” who wields fear as a weapon from the shadows. Gee, I wonder who that could be
“Set in a universe influenced by Amanda Waller’s actions in the DC comic book series Absolute Power, the ‘Unlimited’ Justice League’s organization operates from a new satellite called the Watchtower welcoming all heroes to join its ranks.
In Justice League Unlimited: The Roleplaying Game, being a hero goes beyond simply defeating the villains. The narrative delves into the profound responsibility of bearing this mantle. In the beginning, players will answer five fundamental questions, the League’s ‘Tacit Clauses,’ which define each character’s moral code.”

As you can see, there’s been a lot of “what makes a superhero RPG work” considered here. You won’t just be fighting supervillains. You’ll be saving innocent civilians, taking moments of a quiet interlude between your characters as you explore their personal woes. There’s even a Crisis Die that you can use to launch some big event. Possibly on infinite earths.
At any rate, the game is due to launch on Gamefound in July. If you want to dive into two-fisted superheroic action, you can sign up to learn more by clicking the link below!
Any game that gives me a shot at playing Calendar Man but as a superhero is worth a look!
