Universes Beyond isn’t just for Magic: the Gathering, according to a recent interview with Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks.
Scooby-Doo and Batman and Robin. Murder, She Wrote and Magnum PI. Bob’s Burgers and Archer. Humanity has a history of putting two different things together, mostly in the 70s and 80s. Though, as Archer shows, it’s never too late to cross things over. In fact, in a recent interview with GamesRadar, Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks revealed that he hopes to keep things crossing over, both for Magic: the Gathering, but more specifically, for Dungeons & Dragons.
Universes Beyond Dungeons & Dragons
And to be fair, this is nothing new. After all, D&D has crossover titles with a variety of properties. You’ve got a couple of different Stranger Things D&D boxes, there’s a Rick & Morty D&D starter box, and of course, who can forget the Minecraft Compendium. They’ve even crossed over with Fortnite, but so far that’s just one way; we don’t have a book with rules for a loot llama in 5.5E. Yet.
But according to Cocks, there are “definitely” more D&D crossovers in the works. After all it’s done gangbusters for Magic, why not D&D? It’s just a question of finding the right thing at the right time.
Here’s Cocks’ quote, via GamesRadar:
“I don’t want to take away any headlines from the D&D team, but I think you can definitely expect more crossovers inside of D&D. I mean we’ve had such a fantastic experience with [crossovers] with Magic: the Gathering. D&D is a fantastic play system that I think is very open ended. You already have a fairly wide spectrum with things like Spelljammer to Curse of Strahd. So you already kind of have the DNA for it handled inside the system. So, yeah […] You should expect more of those.”
D&D has crossed over, both ways, with MtG a number of times. There’s the Baldur’s Gate and Forgotten Realms sets for Magic. While D&D has books like Mythic Odysseys of Theros and Guildmaster’s Guide to Ravnica. What any future crossover products might be like is anyone’s guess.
But given the temperature of Cocks with regards to the crossovers, it seems like it’s just a matter of time before we find out what the D&D team’s “headlines” might be.
What would you crossover with D&D? Personally, I’d love to see something real weird, like give me the Mixtape D&D experience. But if I had to guess, I’d say KPop Demon Hunters is a shoe-in if they move in the next year or so.
