“Zone Mortalis games are typically fought between 1,500-point armies in battlefields filled with dense terrain, obscuring walls, and hazardous obstacles, where even moving too fast can be a major health risk. Aircraft and barrage weapons are nowhere to be seen, and you’ll have to think long and hard about where your tanks can even fit before trying to cram a lovingly painted Fellblade into your local hive city’s residential district.”

Zone Mortalis – Horus Heresy Rules
As you can see there are some minor changes and restrictions to what you can bring to a Zone Mortalis fight. That’s kind of the point! These battles represent those indoor battles of attrition and fire lanes. Personally, I really like that these missions give units you might not typically take a real chance to shine.
While the restrictions and rules changes might feel oppressive I view them more as the walls of a different sandbox to play in. I like having to get a bit more creative with my existing units. How CAN I use my collection more effectively here? What am I overlooking? What new strategies and tactics and I employ? That’s all part of the fun for me with Zone Mortalis.
If you’re looking for a little extra spice in your Horus Heresy games or if you’re just wanting to play smaller but intense battles, Zone Mortalis is a great way to do that. If you’ve played other games that use Zone Mortalis rules, you’ll be right at home with these in the Horus Heresy. So give it a shot! There’s a few different mission to try out. So bust out the dense terrain and walls and enjoy some Zone Mortalis action!
