The Lumineth Realm-lords are getting a new Rune Inscription system that offers a new way to customize your fighting force in Age of Sigmar.
Games Workshop is giving the LRL players a new system to master with the Rune Inscriptions. This new army ability allows you to choose various runes during the game and each one has a bonus to provide…but that’s not all. Things are about to get complicated.
A master of the runes of Hysh is able to scribe the correct runes to address the situation at hand. At the beginning of each battle round, you will select one of five runes to depict on your battle scripture. These runes will impart immediate power to up to two friendly units on the battlefield. As the battle progresses, you may depict the same rune multiple times to increase its power, enabling you to pick even more units to benefit from its effect.
Lumineth Realm-lords Rune Inscription
On the surface, this system allows for players to choose a new rune to add every battle round. This rune provides a benefit to two units. That benefit is based on the rune chosen — so far, so good. In fact, let’s look at three of the rune options:
Okay, so far, this is making sense. What’s neat about this system is that you can also choose the same rune multiple times. That means you can go from two units to four all the way up to 10 units if you choose the same rune 5 times. But that might not be the best strategic play. Let’s up the complexity a level by showing off yet another rune.
So this rune not only provides two units a boost, but additionally based on the other runes, those units also gain more benefits. I’m curious to see the fifth rune. I’m also curious if those other three runes have additional text that’s not listed…
Anyhow, that’s not where this system stops either. There’s also some unit specific benefits, too…
Units & Runes
Some of our fellow Lumineth dedicate their lives to the study of one particular rune. Those enlightened souls gain a permanent boon when the presence of their chosen rune increases.
The first example shown off is the Alarith Stoneguard:
If you have TWO instances of Alaithi, Rune of the Mountain, this unit gets their armor boosted to a 3+ save. Note that this unit doesn’t have to be the target…they just get a passive boost. And they aren’t the only unit like this.

Yeah…as you can see these units with the passives can start to make things complicated. There’s going to be a lot of overlapping things to track with this army. If you can master those Runes and the unit interactions, you could have some really potent LRL armies running around. This play style isn’t for everyone but I think there will be folks out there that really get a kick out of the modularity and options provided by the new LRL Rune system.
This system is going to be very interesting to interact with for BOTH players. But I can already tell that it’s going to be frustrating to deal with, too.
