A classic conundrum. You wanna play D&D, but your friends are skeptical and/or just don’t know if they want to.
We all know that scheduling is one of the hardest things in a D&D game. But so is getting one going in the first place. Especially if your friend group isn’t necessarily experienced in D&D. Fortunately, there’s an easy way to get people at least curious – watching shows together as a group. There are plenty of things that you can watch that are just objectively a good time, that prime the pump for suggesting to your friends that you give D&D a try.
Suggest A Rewatch Of Stranger Things: Season 1
Now that Stranger Things is over and done with, and people have felt their feelings about the ending, you might try reminding them of their feelings at the beginning. D&D is everywhere in Season 1, and that season is unambiguously good. You don’t even have to qualify it.
Also, it came out ten years ago. I don’t know about you, but I can barely remember 2024. Rewatch Stranger Things, and when the D&D scenes come on, mention how much fun that looks. And maybe you can all have that sort of fun together.
Watch The Good D&D Movie
The world has changed a lot in the last ten years. Not only was there Stranger Things, but in that timeframe, we’ve also gotten an actual good D&D movie. Honor Among Thieves might not have been a box office grand slam, but it was still a home run. It’s a fun time, and again, you don’t have to make qualifications.
Watch Honor Among Thieves as a bunch of friends, and then the water should be warm enough to suggest “hey, what if we tried that. Maybe we wouldn’t have let Jarnathan down.”
How About Delicious In Dungeon, As A Treat?
This one is almost a no-brainer, Delicious In Dungeon is a rollicking dungeon crawl where the party of heroes, consisting of a mage, a fighter, a thief, and a dwarf (at least at first), venture into the dungeon and feast upon the denizens thereof. It will make you hungry and hungry for D&D.
The Legend Of Vox Machina (Or Just Critical Role)
Or you can go with even less of a brainer and just have your friends watch The Legend of Vox Machina, which is a whole show about the further adventures of the party of D&D heroes who helped make 5E “a thing” in the first place. Even if you don’t play D&D, odds are good you’ve heard of Critical Role. And while sure, you could just watch one of their campaigns – but man oh man is that a tall order. That’s hundreds of hours of playtime. But hey, if your friends are into it, go for that. A much easier bite to chew on might be…
Watch An Actual Play Show
There are so many actual play shows out there now. Of course, there’s Critical Role and Dimension 20 – and at least one of your friends probably has a Dropout subscription. Or has seen clips of Dimension 20 on YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, or TikTok. You could take the plunge on that show, or really any other one – it’s a great way to show your friends “hey ,we could have that much fun together.”
Then all you have to do is schedule time to start playing… uh oh…
