Kang the Conqueror is a time traveler with potent tricks up his advanced sci-fi sleeves. And Iron Lad is also packing some heat in Marvel: Crisis Protocol!
Atomic Mass Games is showcasing the cards for both Kang and Iron Lad as well as their team tactic cards. Today, we’re going to take a deep dive into their rules. Kang is a weird one because we actually covered a “leak” from him a little earlier. Now we have the official cards to show off and they line-up perfectly. So we’re going to skimp on Kang the Conqueror but here are both sides of his character card just for completeness sake:
It’s worth noting that nothing really changed on his injured side. So that’s good to know! Normally, I’d do the next character but I wanted to stop for a moment and take a look at the team tactic card because it’s weird.
Time Travel Is Weird, Man…
This one is pretty weird but it plays into the whole “Kang Dynasty/Council of Kang” thing he does in the comics. It’s where he recruits a bunch of versions of himself from different points in time and…you know what, let’s just chalk this up to “Because Comics!” ANYHOW, this Team Tactic Card basically allows you bring in another character that also happens to be Nathaniel Richards. Now, that character you brought in does go away at the end of the Activation Phase, but they basically get a whole turn.
What I really like about this card is that AMG has left this wide open for different versions of Kang/Nathaniel Richards to use this card, too. Does that mean we could get a Rama-Tut or an Immortus Kang in the future? I wouldn’t rule that out! But as of right now, this really just applies to Iron Lad. So let’s see what he can do.
Iron Lad On The Tabletop
Defensive Stat-wise Iron Lad is a 4/3/3 with 6/6 stamina. He’s also size 2 and moves medium but he does have Flight. Not too shabby for a threat level 3 character. He’s packing three attacks. First up are his Concussion Blasts as a builder. They are range 3 physical attacks for 5 dice. Additionally, on a wild it triggers Discombobulate which can apply a slow or stun (or both is you roll 2 or more wilds).
Energy Blast is up next and, as the name implies, it’s an energy attack at range 4 for 4 dice. It’s a gainer (meaning it gains the character 1 power regardless of what the roll is) and on a wild it causes a push. It’s only on targets that are size 3 or less and it’s a short push but that can shove someone far enough to count! Finally, we get a nod to his older self with The Once and Future Iron Lad. This energy attack is range 3 and 7 dice but costs 3 power. However, it’s got built in rerolls for ANY number of dice. So it should be fairly consistent damage when it goes off.
His injured side is the same stat-wise. For Superpowers he’s got Neurokinetic Armor which costs 1 power to activate. It allows Iron Lad to remove 1 damage or special condition once per turn. He’s also got Strength Actuators for 2 power. This one gives him a medium throw for terrain size 2 or less within range 2. After the terrain throw reworks, this isn’t too bad to have in your back pocket! Finally, we have Temporal Divergence which also costs 2 power. This one allows for Iron Lad to force the attacker to reroll up to 2 of their attack dice. That’s an interesting way to prevent damage/wilds from triggering.
The final preview is for Data Backup. This one directly interacts with Iron Lad and Vision. It allows Iron Lad to essentially spend 5 power to prevent Vision from getting KO’d. It’s a full reset for the android which is kind of huge! Now I’m really wanting to run Iron Lad with the Avengers. It could be a fun way to mix things up.
The Future Is Coming
Your first crack and Kang and Iron Lad will be from the up coming Character Pack. It’s slated for a March 6, 2026 release and it’s currently up for pre-order from Asmodee.
