Taking a rest of any kind in the middle of a dungeon can be dangerous business. But with the right spells, you can camp anywhere.

One of the more tenuous ideas in D&D is the idea of an adventuring day that is roughly “balanced” around certain classes needing to take rests, be they Short or Long. In theory, there are times when you shouldn’t be able to take a rest. Either the dungeon is too dangerous, or there are monsters nearby, but with the right magic spells, you can risk a rest anywhere.

Alarm

This spell is a classic. And this is exactly the kind of thing it was put in the Player’s Handbook for originally, way back in 1st Edition. You’d have the Alarm Spell so you could cast it and take a rest without getting surprised in the middle of the night and/or dungeon. It worked then, it still works now. You create a magical ward that triggers whenever a creature trips it and it alerts you mentally via a nice little ping, so whoever is trying to ambush you doesn’t know that you know that they’re there.

Magic Mouth

Magic Mouth is one of those weird spells that either doesn’t do very much or it lets you do everything including make computers in the game. It all sort of depends on how into Minecraft and/or permissive your DM is. But one thing Magic Mouth can do is say a word whenever a specific set of circumstances is met. And that can be enough to alert you that enemies are snooping around.

Arcane Lock

Of course that’s a lot of “knowing you’re being snuck up on” and not a lot of “keeping from getting snuck up on.” But don’t worry. The Arcane Lock spell is here to help. This spell lets you do all sorts of shenanigans – if you’ve never used it in Baldur’s Gate 3, give it a try, it can keep enemies from fleeing among other things. But in D&D, the Arcane Lock spell makes it hard to break/pick the lock of any door. So all you have to do is Arcane Lock yourself in a room and you can take a rest!

Glyph Of Warding

Why settle for just an alarm when you can have the alarm be an explosion? Sure, Glyph of Warding might get a little expensive in terms of consumable resources. But, it’s also one of the few ways you can leave the magical equivalent of a claymore mine out for your enemies. And when it goes off, you know that someone is coming to get you – and that they’re worse the wear for having tried it.

Mordenkainen’s Magnificent Mansion

Of course if you really want to take a rest anytime, anywhere, all you have to do is be a high level Wizard. Because then, you could cast Mordenkainen’s Magnificent Mansion. It’s not a one-way portal to Mordenkainen’s house (he’d hate that). But it does create an extradimensional mansion, complete with magical servants, to cater to your whims and only you and your friends can access it. The only way to truly be safe is to step outside of reality.

Happy Adventuring!
