Atomic Mass Games has a new way to play Marvel: Crisis Protocol and important studio news. This could get really interesting.
So I’ve been a big fan of Marvel: Crisis Protocol and I’ve been covering it for a while. Part of the appeal to me has been the skirmish game is fun and the miniatures have just been getting better and better. I also really like the Ultimate Encounters and have always wanted more of those. Well, it seems like the folks at Atomic Mass Games had a surprise up their sleeves. Marvel: Crisis Protocol is getting an “expansion” of sorts. Say hello to Marvel: Crisis Protocol Alliances!
From The Video Description
Chaos hits New York as the Green Goblin unleashes his forces. Marvel: Crisis Protocol Alliances Night of the Goblin brings the Spider-Men, Black Cat, and Ghost Spider into a Beat’ em Up adventure miniatures Board Game filled with new sculpts and rising threats. The night belongs to whoever survives. More details next week!
I’m 100% in. Hype-aside, let’s talk about what we know so far.
Marvel: Crisis Protocol – Alliances
This is a new arcade style “beat-em-up” for 1-4 players. That means it’s going to be a cooperative board game set in the MCP universe. Players will get to choose their favorite heroes and throw down in game sessions that are 90-120 minutes long.
The initial release here is Night of the Goblin and will focus on Spider-verse characters battling against the Green Goblin and his cronies. The heroes featured are Ghost-Spider (or Spider-Gwen), Spider-Man (Peter Parker), Black Cat, and Ultimate Spider-Man (Miles Morales).
The miniatures themselves are going be part of the new “F.A.S.T.” Mini Assembly. What that really means is that these miniatures are going to be push-fit and you won’t need to glue them together.
And there’s loads of miniatures already included in this set. I can’t wait to see the Green Goblin Minions up close!
Furthermore, we also get a look at the player dashboards which look intuitive and useful. They kind of make me want these for MCP…just throwing that out there.
Additionally, we also know that this game is using the same dice and scale as Marvel: Crisis Protocol as well. In fact, if you look closely at the cards, you can see these are VERY similar to the regular Marvel: Crisis Protocol rules. And yes, AMG already confirmed that there’s going to be combability between these and standard Marvel: Crisis Protocol as well!
I’m pretty excited about this aspect of the game(s) because this means I can drop in the minis from either game into MCP and it’s all good. No need to worry about scale or bases being off. If you like an alternate sculpt then USE IT!
Also, from their livestream, we know that the game has a slated release date for late Summer/Early Fall 2026. AMG is shooting for a September release. I can’t wait for this one now.
Also during the live stream there was a look a the full board and unpainted miniature. As you can see, the minis come in pre-dyed plastic. If you’re not huge on painting, these are ready to go right out of the box — just build’em and start playing.
AMG also teased something that I’ve been hoping for since the X-Men joined the game. It looks like I’m finally getting my Sentinel mission after all…
I cannot wait for this one now. That’s not going to stop me from playing my own Homebrew Co-op missions in MCP. But this gives me hope for a new style of mode to try out.
Atomic Mass Games Studio Announcements
Having said all that, yesterday wasn’t all good news from AMG. They did have to announce there are some changes moving forward. Below you can read the full press release as I’m including them here for completeness sake. You can also read it from their latest studio transmissions as well.
That’s a whole lot of text so here are a few of the key points:
- Atomic Mass Games will be led by Co-Heads of Studio Will Shick and Brandon Anderson.
- Star Wars™: Legion and Marvel: Crisis Protocol are considered “flagship titles” and are going to be receiving “enhanced focus” moving forward.
- For Star Wars™: Legion that means new sub-factions, new gameplay expansions like Skirmish Mode Special Operations and Full Scale War modes as well as supporting product types.
- For Marvel: Crisis Protocol they wanted to focus on “consistent and compelling product expansions” from the Marvel© Universe. (See Marvel Crisis Protocol Alliances above)
- Star Wars™: Shatterpoint product line will be transitioning into a specialist core game line.
So basically Star Wars™: Legion and Marvel: Crisis Protocol are going to get more attention and support while Star Wars™: Shatterpoint will be scaled back to a specialist game. It’s still going to be supported “ensure consistent availability and the highest level of gameplay experience possible by AMG, while streamlining the number of releases… ” you can draw your own conclusions from that line.
It’s not all doom and gloom at least. There was a lot of speculation about this announcement when it came out last night. Folks were quick to point out that Asmodee did get saddled with quite a bit of debt from the spin-offs from the Embracer Group. I’m also sure that certain economic policies have made things …challenging as well. While I can only speculate, it does seem like AMG is looking to focus on the more popular titles and really expand the things that are working for them. That’s good news for Legion and Crisis Protocol fans. Not so great news for Shatterpoint players. We’ll have to keep an eye on this situation and see how it develops over time.
Atomic Mass Games is cooking things up!
