If the early months are anything to go by, the Summer of 2026 will be apropos for a book called Campfire Tales for Call of Cthulhu.
Scary stories around a flickering fire that is the only thing holding at bay the night’s plutonian embrace is a primal image burned into the very DNA of humanity. We have long gathered around fires to shudder in shared terror at what might lurk beyond the edges of light and warmth. And only relatively recently did we start adding long sticks and marshmallows to the mix.
But the point is, in the coming months, Chaosium will release Call of Cthulhu: Campfire Tales. A book focused on young scouts who get mixed up in horrors beyond their imaginings. Surely this can only end well.
Call of Cthulhu: Campfire Tales – Coming Later This Year
The book itself is a simple premise. It brings that same spirit of “kids on bikes having an adventure” to the terrifying world of the Cthulhu mythos. But you know, it makes sense. After all, the halls of Miskatonic University are often filled with young, ambitious students. They had to have come from somewhere.
Who were these scholars and hard-boiled detectives and archivists who face horrors from beyond the darkness between the stars before they were adults? Now’s your chance to find out.
And what a premise:
“Call of Cthulhu: Campfire Tales is coming in 2026! With Call of Cthulhu: Campfire Tales, you play young scout-investigators as they come face-to-face with dangers from beyond this world. When the scout-investigators reach adulthood, they are ready to take on Call of Cthulhu campaigns – as fully fledged investigators!”

I mean, this sounds like the perfect way to run a prologue to a long-running Cthulhu campaign. You start as scouts and have an encounter that forever alters the course of your lives. Then you pick up the campaign years later, with a reunion and a familiar horror come calling once again…
I love it. Especially since the new book really leans into the “scouting” side of things. It promises new skills and rules, including “scout ability badges” and “adversity.” As well, you’ll find a new setting: the town of Westhaven. Gotta have someplace safe to go camping. And along with the rules for creating young investigators, there are four playable scenarios which can be one-shots or a linked short campaign. You can get a taste of all of this at this year’s Chaosium Con, complete with neckerchief, merit badges, and more.
Look for Call of Cthulhu: Campfire Tales later this year!
