Surprise updates are in the air for all the Baldur’s Gate games, apparently, as both BG 1 & 2 get a new update to the Infinity Engine.
What a world we live in. In the same sort of blur of concurrent things happening on the internet that changes from week to week in a frenzy of boiling trends, we get an update for games that are literally decades old. Diablo II got a surprise update out of nowhere. And now, Baldur’s Gate 1 & 2 (Enhanced Editions) have been updated with an improved version of the Infinity Engine.
Baldur’s Gate 1 & 2 Updated
Maybe it’s because nobody can buy new hard drives or updated graphics cards anymore (thanks to the twin towers of hungry tech companies betting it all on the AI bubble and cryptocurrency) but classic games that run on basically anything are getting updates all of a sudden.
Case in point, Baldur’s Gate 1 & 2 got an update today with a focus on preserving the games into the future. Beamdog, the current developer of the games in question, says it’s to focus on delivering “long-term stability, modern platform support, and a few quality of life improvements.” It’s necessary stuff, too. How many games out there can’t be played anymore? As technology changes, it takes effort and passion to keep things alive – and that’s without companies actively trying to “destroy” their own games.
At any rate, it’s exciting not just that there’s an update, but that this only seems to be the beginning of it, per the announcement/patch notes:
“Our goal is to keep these classics running smoothly amid evolving technical requirements and operating systems on both PC and mobile. […] We’re focused on improving the overall quality-of-life experience. That’s why the 2.7 update introduces proper cloud saving and native support for Apple Silicon Macs.”
Some of the things addressed in the upcoming new patch include: Dynamic Language Support, Steam Cloud saves now being able to be controlled via the Steam client, support for Apple Silicon, and new translations of the game.
If you have either of the classic Baldur’s Gate games, or their expansions, or Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition, you can try out the new patch today by opting into the beta. The full patch should arrive sometime soon.
See you in Baldur’s Gate! Maybe it’s time to take on Irenicus again.
