A new book from Goodman Games of DCC fame wants to put more dragon riding in your D&D games. Check out Dragon Rider’s Primer.

Of all the things that D&D needs, a book on actually how to handle dragon riding and make it feel cool and not just like playing the game with the cheat codes turned on is probably up there. Along with “rules that make exploration feel fun without putting all the burden on the DM” and “social interactions that amount to more than rolling to persuade”.

But while you might have to wait a while for those last two, Goodman Games of Dungeon Crawl Classics fame is looking to alleviate the dragon-riding problem with a new book on BackerKit: Dragon Rider’s Primer.

Dragon Rider’s Primer: Aerial Adventures, Characters, & More!

The Dragon Rider’s Primer is exactly the kind of high-minded D&D concept that gets me thinking, “I should make more time to run a long-term campaign.” Because it’s got such a cool idea – the characters ride on dragons – and that’s enough of a spark to inspire years of adventures.

Because the sky is literally the limit. And better still, this book is described as “crunchy,” and if you don’t know Goodman Games, you should know that they love crunch over there. It’s packed full of options for flying mounts and their adversaries, including 12 new subclasses, new feats, spells, and even backgrounds that are compatible with both 5E and 5.5E.

“This crunchy 5E sourcebook elevates your adventure to new heights with flying mounts for all characters and their adversaries! Variant cover by 2014-era legend Hydro74 is hobby trade exclusive! Plus exclusive play mat, pogs, and pawns for tabletop play.

Within these pages you’ll find everything you need to make mounted flight an integral part of your 5E game experience. Be warned! This tome is a feast of aerial character options, new rules, and new magic that will cast your campaign skyward forever more. Once your players have experienced flight like this, no matter which heroic personae they adopt, they’ll never want to return to the ground again.”

And yeah, I mean just look at that Hydro74 cover. Delicious stuff. And you’ll only find it in a few places: as part of the crowdfunding campaign, at conventions, or at select game stores.

You can think of this book as the “complete aerial combat” guide as it has rules for mounted flying combat, aerial travel over long distances, rules on how to bring it into your game. You can start a campaign from the ground up (pun intended) and take to the skies. In fact, if you don’t want to wait, you can take the beta rules for a spin right now by clicking here.

The Dragon Rider’s Primer is crowdfunding for the next 16 days. Get in while you can!
