A new trailer from Studio Agate and Chaosium shows off the upcoming 3rd Edition of the swashbuckling 7th Sea RPG.
Later this year, we’ll get to dive into a new edition of the swashbuckling RPG, 7th Sea. But before then, a new trailer whets the appetite and shows off how the new system is taking inspiration from the game’s legendary 1st Edition to launch the newest version of mechanics. This means, for you real dice nerds out there, a return to Roll & Keep, but with a whole lot of other innovations besides.
7th Sea 3rd Edition Trailer – Full Swashbuckling
I love that you can tell the developers are also fans of the game and the genre. In the video, they break down some of the reasons for and inspiration behind 3rd Edition 7th Sea. I think at the heart of it is the change in mechanics from 2nd Edition. With the new system, the developers have taken the community’s feedback and looked for what gets people excited to play.
Which, in this case, is both the mechanics as well as the story and setting. It’s worth noting, because sometimes, a game has to feel right, you know. It’s like the TTRPG equivalent of mouthfeel. Which I guess is dicefeel. But you can tell when a game is both fun to play, and it fits the thing it’s trying to do.
When it doesn’t, you get that infamous ludonarrative dissonance your one indie TTRPG friend loves to talk about. The only reason I mention it is because the Roll & Keep system was one of the things that helped 7th Sea carve out its niche in the first place.
But the story and the setting of the world are also super important. As the developers say, it’s still the same world. If you got all the 2nd Edition books, the story is still the same, they’re not obsolete – at least as far as the lore goes.
In fact they’ll probably help paint a richer picture of the world, because in 7th Sea 3rd Edition, the timeline is moved forward a decade. What’s changed? What heroes is the world in need of? You can find out when 7th Sea 3E comes to Kickstarter later this year.
