Exalted Funeral, in collaboration with Genuine Entertainment, is producing TAVERS, a role-playing game inspired by the immersive art spaces of the Meow Wolf collective. TAVERS: The Meow Wolf Roleplaying Game is scheduled to release in December.
Meow Wolf is a DIY art collective that produces large immersive art spaces designed to create a story-rich environment, with installations in Houston and Grapevine, Texas, Denver, Colorado, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Las Vegas, Nevada, and new projects planned for L.A. and New York City. These art spaces create interconnected stories with shared imagery between them.
The game, TAVERS, imagines these art spaces as part of a world in which special individuals are able to access a psychic network called the TAVE, and use that network to open multi-dimensional portals and change the laws of reality. It is built on a rules-light group-focused game system designed to appeal to both new and experienced role players looking for a collaborative storytelling approach and tactile gameplay elements.
TAVERS offers an easy-to-learn system that helps players get into the game quickly through instructive examples of play and optional pregenerated characters. It focuses on world-building and character development, and features a puzzle-based tactile inventory system and mechanics based on eight-sided dice referred to as “Ossahedrals”.
The core set, or Quantum Parabox, comes with everything needed to play, including the 150-page full-color rulebook, three eight-sided dice, five blank and eight pregenerated character sheets, “Psych-O-Dynamic” reference wheel, game tokens, inventory sheets, and art stickers. MSRP is $75.00. The core rulebook will also be available separately at $50.00 MSRP.
The game was written by Tiger Wizard (Andrew Bellury) of Exalted Funeral and Michael J. Wilson of Meow Wolf and features artwork from a stable of artists including Tradd Moore, Jesse Jacobs, Jordan Speer, Jamiyla Lowe, Sam McKenzie, Tristan Wright, Sam Mameli, Pol-Edouard, and Luckasz Kowalczuk along with Meow Wolf artists Luke Dorman, Caitlin LeMoine, Brandon Schmidt, Caleb Ortega, Marley Prudeaux, and Andrew Tellez.
Exalted Funeral is raising funds for the production through a Kickstarter campaign that has attracted $162,661 in pledges from 1,443 backers as of this writing (an average of $112.72 per backer). The campaign includes a retailer-only backer package. Backer fulfillment is planned for December.
Last year, Exalted Funeral launched the Pukeapocalypse (see “‘Pukeapocalypse’ Spews Forth”) and Monty Python’s Cocurricular Mediaeval Reenactment Programme (see “Exalted Funeral and Crowbar Creative Announced New ‘Monty Python RPG’ Release Date”) tabletop games.
