Want to cast a spell that protects your party? There’s a surprising number of them; here are a few handy ones to keep in mind.
One of the best things about playing a spellcaster in D&D is protecting your friends. After all, friendship is the real magic. Well, that and fireball. But what good is fireball if no one’s around to watch you blow everything up? So here are five spells that can keep your party alive and well.
Sanctuary

Sanctuary is hands-down one of the best defensive spells in the game. It can turn the tide of a difficult fight because it can keep that crucial party member alive – especially if they are not attacking. But even if you cast it on the party Fighter, Sanctuary prevents enemies from attacking the target unless they make a Will save. And if they fail their save, they have to pick a new target or lose the attack or spell they were doing. It can shut down a whole round of attacks, potentially, and you can cast it on yourself or a friend. It’s even better if it lasts longer, like casting it on a healer, but nobody will ever mind having Sanctuary cast on them.
Wall of Stone

You ever get the urge to just hide away from it all? Well, Wall of Stone can help you there. This spell lets you create a literal shelter on the battlefield, making a wall of stone spring up from the earth. Or wherever. You can get a decent-sized wall: ten 10×10 foot panels of stone, that are defensive, and can even let you completely seal yourselves away from the enemy. So you can regroup and be ready.
Shield of Faith

Sometimes, though, protection is really simple. You just need a little boost to the AC, and Shield of Faith does just that. It’s always better to cast this on a friend; their AC goes up by +2, and you’re more likely to keep that AC bonus up because they’re getting attacked, not you.
Otiluke’s Resilient Sphere

This spell is like Sanctuary, only it completely protects the inhabitant of it from the outside world. You enclose someone in a magical shimmering sphere of energy – while they’re in it, they are protected from anything from the outside world, all physical objects, energy, or other spell effects are held at bay, though similarly they can’t cause effects from within to go outside of the sphere. But still, this is a guaranteed way to protect a party member.
Featherfall

Featherfall is one of those spells that is a complete game changer. You don’t need it until you really do – and the best thing about it is, you can cast it on any of your friends whenever they fall (as long as you’re close enough, but that’s why we don’t split the party). The second someone goes over the edge, you can cast featherfall on them and prevent them from being a stain on the landscape as they safely descend. Whatever happens after that is up to you.
