Are you wanting to play with the Golden Children of the Emperor but don’t want a full Legio Custodes army? Here’s how you can.
The Legio Custodes are getting a fancy new Battle Group box packed with all new plastic miniatures. It’s looking like a great way to dive into the the army. That said, maybe you’re more a Space Marine player and just want to dabble. Well, good news: Allies exist. The bad news is that if you’re playing a Traitor Legion the Legio Custodes are not interested in your Heresy. They are “unflappably loyal” and will only ally in with Loyalist armies.
For the Loyalist armies out there it’s actually super easy to add them. Just drop in an Allied Detachment to your army and you’re good to go.
Legio Custodes Allies
[An Allied Detachment of Legio Custodes] gives you a Command slot for your Shield Captain and plenty of Troops slots for your Custodian and Sentinel Guard Sodalities. Normally you’d only be able to take one Auxiliary Detachment to contain either the Dreadnought or the grav-tank and need Logistical Benefit to fit the other in, but the Legio Custodes have access to a new Prime Advantage – Prefect – which gives the Shield Captain the Officer of the Line (2) ability (and an extra Wound as a bonus) so you have more room to expand your force later.
Easy! So now that the issue is cleared up and you’re tempted to bring them to the tabletop, what else are they going to do? The short answer is bring the pain.
They can split Terminators in two with a single sweep and resist an ungodly amount of return fire, with even the most basic Custodian* possessing the rare Eternal Warrior (1) rule that cuts down on the damage they suffer.
If you’ve never seen the Custodes in action it’s a sight to behold. While they are perfectly capable of firing their weapons down range what they really excel at is wielding death in melee. The standard Space Marine Praetors will have a tough time taking on a Shield Captain in a duel. And as for the “basic” Custodes vs a Standard Space Marine? …Yeah, that’s not really a fair fight either. The Legio Custodes also have access to four special Gambits in a fight, too.
The Legio Custodes are an elite fighting force. Their presence on the Battlefield is a sign that the Emperor is watching this fight. They are terrifying allies to have on your side. So you can image how it would be to see them coming to fight you on the tabletop. Sorry Traitors, you made your choice. Now the Legio Custodes is coming to collect that check.
But don’t take my word for it. Just wait until the Liber Custodes drops and you’ll be able to see all these rules for yourself. The Legio Custodes are coming and it’s going to be rough out there for the Traitors.
What if they were Marines…but better?
