One of the best things about Onslaught is, that if you already know D&D, you’re most of the way to knowing the rules of Onslaught. The core mechanics are unchanged: roll a d20, add modifiers, and try to get higher than the enemy’s AC to land a hit. But Onslaught adds a lot more to the mix.

Each character has their own board to list their abilities and track HP, Inspiration, and XP since your characters can level up between games.

But, D&D Onslaught is a competitive game. Each game will list the objectives for the scenario and how to score points. This could be collecting treasure, or killing monsters, or even other players. It’s a game that rewards adaptable teams that can tackle several objectives at once.

How to Play

D&D Onslaught is a two-player skirmish style battle game. Players control teams of heroes who are rivaling for treasure, monster skills, and victory points. Points are earned by defeating enemy characters as well as monsters, or by successfully accomplishing specific goals or missions.

Turns are broken up into three phases: the initiative phase (where players can assign initiative to their characters), the action phase (where characters activate and make their moves), and the end phase, (where abilities refresh and the round is tallied up).

Throughout D&D Onslaught, players and their characters will take actions and bonus actions – much like standard D&D – where they may move, attack, loot, or any number of other actions. They may also enter into combat, either against enemy characters or monsters. And, of course, while battling their way through the map, characters can expect to gain levels, and by extension gain abilities and bonuses.

Should I Pick This Game Up?

Dungeons & Dragons: Onslaught is easy to learn, quick to play, and is a fun skirmish game. There’s enough tactical depth and choice to keep things interesting, and the PvEvP style gameplay adds an extra layer to your typical PvP skirmish game. It is fun, fast, and easy to get into that will be a great addition to your collection that you’ll want to play again and again.
