Godzilla will return to his roots in a new standalone miniseries from IDW Publishing, The Horror of Godzilla, which is set in Tokyo in 1954 and is a prequel to IDW’s Kai-Sei Era, which is their current continuity for the character. The four-issue series will be written by Griffin Sheridan and Ethan S. Parker, with art by Tristan Jones, and the first issue will be released on July 29, 2026, with a main cover by Jones, a movie homage cover by Pablo Tunica, a variant by Trevor Henderson, a 1:25 variant by Patrick Horvath, and a 1:50 cover by Kelley Jones.
While Godzilla has been crossing over with other characters, including the Marvel Universe (see “Marvel Caps Off Godzilla Cross-Over Trilogy”) and Sonic the Hedgehog (see “Godzilla Meets Sonic the Hedgehog”), the trend in the movies has been the opposite, with Godzilla: Minus One and the upcoming Godzilla: Zero set in postwar Japan (see “‘Godzilla Minus Zero’”), which is set to release in November 2026.
