Even if you missed Free Comic Book Day this year, there’s still a chance to get your hands on the new D&D comic, Magefall, for free.
Mordenkainen is the magical master of neutrality. He was once Gary Gygax’s personal character, and has since become a storied part of D&D canon, even crossing from his home plane of Greyhawk to rise to nigh-multiversal fame/infamy. Even the Forgotten Realms know Mordenkainen and his Magnificent Mansions and Faithful Hounds.
And now you can read a new comic featuring the eponymous mage as he discovers that Bahamut, the Platinum Dragon, has some dire news. News that makes for a fight.

In the comic, Mordenkainen learns that he is the subject of an apocalyptic prophecy. Naturally, not wanting to be “removed” so that it can’t come to pass, a big magical duel gets started. It’s the kind of comic book spectacle you’d expect, especially at the prologue to a new sprawling tale.
And that’s exactly what Magefall is. It’s the start of a new grand adventure. You can learn a little more about the comic from an interview with the creators, linked below.
“In this free Dungeons & Dragons graphic story from Dark Horse Comics, you’ll witness an epic arcane duel between the powerful wizard, Mordenkainen, and an aspect of a dragon god! The fate of the Forgotten Realms is at stake in this prologue to a grand tale! Written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, illustrated by Alessandro Miracolo, colored by Valentina Taddeo, and lettered by Haley Rose-Lyon.
Keep your sending stones tight in hand for more information about this story coming from this year’s San Diego Comic Con, and dive a little deeper behind-the-scenes with writers Jackson and Collin in this Q&A.”

Hey, free comics is free comics. Hard to argue with that. Especially if you want to see some cool mage inspiration. As a DM I’m always looking for things to steal from – and this kinda thing, you don’t even have to work too hard to steal from, since it’s already set in D&D.
At any rate, you can download your copy of D&D Magefall and read the interview at the link below!
If I found out I was at the heart of a prophecy, I would remind everyone that prophecies often come to pass especially hard when you try to stop them from happening!
