The Talons of the Emperor have been sharpened for 11th edition 40k!

The best of the best of the best venture forth from Terra in today’s 11th edition Faction Focus with three new detachments. As always, a video accompanies the article with a little discussion about these new rules for the Adeptus Custodes and their close allies, the Sisters of Silence.

Might of the Moritoi

The Custodians are nigh-invincible, but this detachment puts the emphasis on “nigh”, focusing as it does on buffing the army’s dreadnought chassis.

This rule will be particularly beneficial to your close combat-equipped dreadnoughts with a flat-out +2″ M bonus and an additional +1 on your advance and charge rolls. Most Custodes armies have only a handful of these walkers at their disposal, so being able to quickly cross the battlefield and deliver them to their targets is going to be hugely impactful. And speaking of impact…

This enhancement essentially permits a Custodes dreadnought to use the Crushing Impact stratagem for free. Crushing Impact is the new name for what was previously titled “Tank Shock,” and the article sneaks in the fact that it’s now available to Monsters as well as Vehicles.

It’s worth noting that Crusing Impact has a chance to cause damage to both your target and your own unit. So, use it wisely!

The final preview for this detachment includes another sneaky edition reveal: the Telemon Dreadnought is joining the 41st millennium! Previously, the Telemon had been available only to Horus Heresy players, but it seems that someone found a few mothballed in an abandoned garage deep beneath the Palace on Terra. This stratagem will turn your Telemon into a Rapid Fire beast on demand with what seems to be a truly withering volley of fire.

Silent Hunters

This detachment draws our attention to the null maidens of the Sisters of Silence. Specialist psy-hunters, the Sisters also provide the Custodians with some fast and nimble conventional support. It seems that the game developers envision the Sisters support Custodians as objective snaggers who can help ferret out hidden units.

As we’ve seen in previous Faction Focus articles, hidden will be a big deal in this edition. The advance forces of your Silent Sisters squads will be able to act as spotters, increasing the detection range of targets by +3″. This should help immensely in bringing your biggest guns to bear on even the sneakiest enemies.

Many, maybe most, psyker units in the game enjoy powerful invulnerable saves but the Sisters of Silence have a solution with this enhancement. Psky-out grenades will help even the odds granting them the Explosives keyword and therefore the ability to use the Explosives stratagem. Rerolling mortal wounds is a very unusual benefit and is going to be absolutely punishing against enemy psykers for the cost of a single command point.

Even with the relatively points-cheap Sisters units, you’re likely to be fielding a low model count army. Fighting horde armies becomes a little more manageable with this stratagem which adds a devastating Blast 1 keyword to the already fearsome Torrent attacks of Witchseekers.

Tharanatoi Hammerblow

Today’s final preview examines a detachment for the Allarus Terminators. These units are the toughest of the tough-as-nails Custodians. Thanks to their ability to teleport, they’re an unpredictable threat for your opponent to contend with, and this detachment improves that core utility.

This is a simple but massively powerful ability allowing you to re-roll charge rolls on the turn they arrive from Deep Strike via an ingress move. Increasing the reliability of your charges is always important, but absolutely critical from a Deep Strike, and this detachment looks really appealing.

Building upon the detachment’s rapid attack emphasis, this enhancement allows your Allarus terminators to Deep Strike on turn 1! Your opponent will have little time to position before you unleash your heaviest-hitting infantry right where they can cause the most damage. Nasty stuff, this makes the Custodians a surprisingly fast-moving force.

Inevitably, your Allarus units are going to draw a lot of fire. For just 1 CP, you can improve their already impressive durability with +1T, making them able to weather almost any counter-attack.

That’s it for today, but there’s one more Faction focus coming this week. We’ll return tomorrow as the Death Guard breach quarantine.

With the Telemon making the jump to 40k, do you think we’ll see any other 30k models join the game?
