It’s time for some fun in the snow with Captain Solo and Commander Skywalker on Tauntauns from Star Wars: Legion. Unboxed and Up Close!

There’s a few movies that I’d consider formative and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes back is certainly one of them. That’s why I was looking forward to getting my hands on this kit in particular. It’s coming with two of my favorite characters at a pivotal point in the original trilogy. These are a little bit like a time capsule for me. So I’m glad that Atomic Mass Games sent me a review copy for this kit. So let’s see how it stacks up to my memories!

The nostalgia is strong with this one.

Captain Solo & Commander Skywalker on Tauntauns Unboxed

Starting off as we do around here, we’ve got the contents of the box. As you’re probably expecting (because this is an AMG product) we’ve got all the contents in separate baggies. The sprues are in the main bag, then a smaller bag for the cards/tokens, and finally a smaller baggy for the bases. Part of me wants to save all these bags and make little sandwiches to put inside of them…but that’s an entirely different hobby project.

ANYHOW, let’s take a quick look at the cards.

The set comes with a full set of cards for each of the supported languages. I used the English versions here for the rules and the French versions to showcase the art. If you’re looking for a really deep dive on these cards (or hi-rez close-ups), AMG has a full article about them. I’d recommend giving that a read if you want more on the tactics for these characters, as this is a simple unboxing.

And now we get to the sprues! This set had two sprues, as you can see above. I thought it was a little strange as you’ve basically got the two character torsos on one sprue, while the lower portion/tauntauns’ bodies are on the other sprue. That said, I did manage to build both of these, and I have a little bit of advice on that front. Let’s see those minis up close!

Captain Solo & Commander Skywalker On Tauntauns Up Close

First up, I really like both of these miniatures. I think AMG did a really good job capturing the faces of both Han and Luke at this point in the saga. They really do look like they were pulled off the movie screen.

As far as assembly tips for Captain Solo, this one wasn’t too bad. I will say that both of these miniatures have a similar issue that pretty much all cavalry (or mount-style characters) have. That problem is always the torso attaching to the mount via some funky leg joints. I think that AMG did a decent job on that front, though.

There are some minor gaps where the boots meet the knee/pants, but they really aren’t that noticeable. I pressed them together with enough force that I felt comfortable with the size of the gap. I also used plastic glue and not super glue as well. If you do end up with a big gap due to other reasons, some gap fill and primer should cover it up fairly easily.

There’s also a bit of a gap between the top of the Tauntaun’s heads and their necks. This is going to be way less noticeable from the top down, though. Fortunately, the fur does make the gap fill around that harness really easy if you want to. Or just let it ride. I don’t think anyone is going to see it once it’s primed up anyhow.

The last trouble spot I had was the arm/hand holding the reins because they attach to the Tauntaun’s neck. If you don’t do a good job cleaning your miniatures before assembly, you might end up with a really rough-looking fit. So just take your time cleaning everything, do a good dry fitting before you glue, and trust the process. You should end up with enough play for the arm to fit in the torso and for the reins to pop in place on the Tauntauns.

I’m pretty happy with the end results, and I think a quick primer job will cover up most of the mistakes/gaps already. I’m going back and forth with myself on whether I want to do a snow base or not. Part of me says snow is a must. But that doesn’t really go with the rest of the army. Oh well. Guess I’ll just have to start a Hoth-themed Rebel army now…

Star Wars: Legion – Captain Solo & Commander Skywalker on Tauntauns $59.99

Tauntauns became a trusted form of transportation for the Rebel Alliance on Hoth. Their speed even made them a favored option of rebel commanders Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, both of which use the domesticated beast to swiftly move through the frontline to lead their troops.

This expansion brings Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, mounted on their tauntauns to the Rebel Alliance army. Luke Skywalker is a new Commander option, while Han Solo is a new Operative option for Rebel Alliance and Echo Base Defender Battle Forces. Each brings new Command Cards and abilities to help the Rebellion in its fight against the Empire.

This kit is out now and available from Asmodee or your FLGS!
