World’s Largest RPGs have a new campaign to convert the venerable sci-fi RPG Traveller into 5th Edition D&D. Check it out.

Traveller is one of the oldest RPGs out there. Like D&D, it’s been around since the earliest days of the hobby, coming in only a few years after D&D started breaking ground. Because as much as people love fantasy, they also love science fiction. And if you give people the chance to play with laser pistols and robots, they will leap at it.

Today, World’s Largest RPGs looks to bridge that gap with a full 5E Conversion line for Traveller. Meaning now you can play with all the sci-fi goodness of Traveller and the familiar d20s of D&D. It’s an ambitious project, for sure, and hopefully one that brings more people under the Traveller umbrella.

And the demand is clearly there. Within two minutes, the BackerKit campaign was fully funded, and at press time has raised nearly 10x its funding goal with 45 days still to go. The people are hungry for a D&D but sci-fi game. Case in point, look at Star Wars 5E, the unofficial sci-fi conversion. Or the soon-to-be-released Exodus RPG, which uses the D&D ruleset.

Which brings us to World’s Largest RPGs, the same folks who brought you the revamped World’s Largest Dungeon last year. Now they have their sights set on Traveller, though as they point out, it’s done while keeping the themes that make Traveller its own unique thing at the forefront:

“World’s Largest RPGs brings its ambitious, comprehensive publishing approach to the far future by converting Traveller, the most influential science-fiction TTRPG of all time to the latest edition of the world’s most populare role-playing game.

All of Traveller’s classic themes remain: free traders chasing profit on the edge of civilization, mercenaries taking contracts in bizarre, alien conflicts, explorers pushing beyond the frontiers, interstellar adventurers jumping from port to port, job to job, making their mark upon whole worlds, systems, and sectors.”

The BackerKit campaign comes with four different hardcover books that will set you up in a galaxy of your own making. There’s the Core Rules book, which has all the basic rules you’ll need to play. Gear and Robots is all about what it says in the title. Starships, fittingly enough, covers space travel, while Worlds and Vehicles has rules for making your own worlds, vehicles, and monsters.

Total conversions are always a little bit of a gambit, but it looks like this one is off to a running start. Especially since it’s being done by long-time designer Timothy Brown in full coordination with Mongoose Publishing. There are decades of Traveller experience on this project. You can take a look at the conversion elements on the BackerKit campaign, including the new psionics rules World’s Largest has planned – all at the link below.
