Honestly, this is good news for many reasons. The upshot is: the Baldur’s Gate TV series is still ‘in development’ while The Last Of Us ends.
Hey, listen, I’ll take any example of ‘person in power acting responsibly’ I can get these days. And hearing that the showrunner of the upcoming Baldur’s Gate TV series, Craig Mazin, who also heads up The Last Of Us, is not acting like a greedy tool but rather making a decision that seems good? For both of the projects he is in charge of? Seems downright miraculous in 2026. Maybe the pendulum is finally starting to swing the other way.
Look, just let me have this one. Anyway, read on to see what exactly HBO’s depressingly titled Chairman and CEO of Content (why is it always content?), Casey Bloys, had to say about it in an interview with The Radio Times that has since been making the rounds.
Baldur’s Gate TV Series Isn’t The Last Of Craig Mazin’s Projects
If you think about it, this is good news for both Baldur’s Gate fans and The Last of Us fans. And I’ll bet the overlap is bigger than you’d think. After all, both video games are story-driven franchises that people love – at times intensely – and that feature memorable scenes with animals, albeit for wildly different reasons.
I’m just saying, The Last of Us has its giraffe, and Baldur’s Gate has its bear…
At any rate, in an interview with the Radio Times, Casey Bloys revealed the expected release date for the final season of The Last of Us, originally announced back in April last year. As well as telling viewers not to hold their breath for a Baldur’s Gate TV show any time soon.
“Obviously, he’s deep into season 3 of The Last of Us – but Baldur’s Gate was something he brought to us. He’s very passionate about it, and he’s thinking about it, and we’ve talked about it, but he’s going to focus on The Last of Us, and then come back to [Baldur’s Gate] when he’s got more time.”
So yeah, showrunner Mazin won’t be burning himself out. Nor will he be trying to split his focus and diluting the potential of either show. It shouldn’t feel so rare and heartening to see someone in charge of anything acting responsibly.
Look for the series finale of The Last of Us in 2027, and Baldur’s Gate 3 sometime after that. My guess? 2029, just because they’ll be redecorating all the castle sets from House of The Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
What thread of hope are you hanging on by?
